Public Fire Paramedic Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

With the MESC’s Public Fire Paramedic Program, enroll in single track, one-year training to obtain a Fire & Rescue Certificate or Primary Care Paramedic Certificate -OR- complete both single tracks to receive a Public Fire Paramedic Program (PFPP) diploma. All training is full-time and in-person at our Brandon campus.

Our graduates are prepared for direct entry to many fields, including federal, provincial, and municipal emergency services, industrial safety, response teams, and private industry.

 

Fire & Rescue Certificate Track

Learn to safely respond to many types of emergency situations involving fire, weather disasters, technical rescues, and hazardous materials response. Course delivery is theory based as well as through hands-on learning completing real-life scenarios. Our Brandon campus has classrooms, an indoor training arena, as well as an 11-acre Practical Training Site.

Train in areas of:

  • Fire fighting level I & II
  • Vehicle extrication & rescue
  • Rope rescue
  • Surface water rescue
  • Ice rescue
  • Hazardous materials
  • Community education
  • Mental wellness
  • Officer & leadership
  • Emergency vehicle operation & maintenance

Prerequisite Overview:

  • Class 5 Full Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain Class 4 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement
  • High school transcript with grade 12 English
  • Safe Boater Operators License
  • Comfortable working in situations such as in water and at heights

The following prerequisites are subject to change. Do not obtain these until more information is provided by the MESC in 2025:

  • Immunizations and medical clearance
  • Vision testing
  • Standard Fire Aid BLS & AED
  • WHIMIS certification
  • Security clearance record checks

Tuition for the Fire & Rescue Certificate Track is $10,000.00 (cdn) plus equipment and materials.

Primary Care Paramedic Certificate Track

The PCP track provides knowledge in areas such as routine and emergency care in medical and trauma settings, as well as mental well-being support tailored to first responders. Course delivery includes theory, hands-on learning completing real life scenarios, as well as clinical and practicum placements.

  • Foundations of Paramedicine
  • Medicine & Systems
  • Trauma
  • Treating Diverse Demographics
  • Special Considerations
  • Mass Casualty Incidents
  • Community education
  • Mental wellness
  • Officer & leadership

Prerequisite Overview:

  • Class 5 Full Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain a Class 4 Driver’s License
  • High school transcript with grade 12 English and one of grade 12 Chemistry, Biology, or Physics
  • 6 credit hours of Anatomy & Physiology (A&P), including lab component within five (5) years of the course start date

  • Medical Terminology
  • Immunizations and medical clearance
  • Physical fitness assessment
  • Standard First Aid BLS & AED
  • WHIMIS certification
  • Security clearance record checks

Tuition for the Primary Care Paramedic Certificate Track is $10,000.00 (cdn) plus equipment and materials.
